The 20th Annual Charity Golf Tournament took place on August 11, 2016. This tournament was originally established in 1997 as the Air Labrador -Nasittuq Memorial Cancer Tournament and was used to raise funds to assist with the cost of cancer education, awareness and prevention initiatives. It was established in memory of three individuals who served their employer and their community with honour and distinction, namely: Mr. Harold Oake – Air Labrador; Ms. Josie Michelin – Nasittuq; and Mr. Wayne MacPherson – Amaruk Golf Club. From 1997 to 2008, more than $135,000 was raised and most of it used by our partners, the local chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society and Labrador-Grenfell Health, to develop and implement cancer education and prevention initiatives that were in keeping with the objectives of the fund.
In 2008, it was agreed the funding raised through the golf tournament would be used to support the Grenfell Foundation. Since the inception of the tournament in 1997, the Labrador East chapter of the Grenfell Foundation raised more than $235,000 and will close to $15,000 was raised in 2016, bringing the total to over $250,000.
The Labrador East Chapter continues to fund initiatives that are making a difference in the community. We will continue to work with Labrador-Grenfell Health to identify priority projects that will enhance patient care in the region.
