Recovery Council Members

The Department of Health and Community Services is seeking individuals with lived experience of mental illness and/or an addiction as well as family members from across Newfoundland and Labrador interested in serving on a provincial Recovery Council. The Recovery Council will advise the Minister of Health and Community Services on progress of the implementation of government’s mental health and addictions action plan, Towards Recovery.

The Recovery Council will provide input and advice to the Minister of HCS. This advice may include matters related to:

  1. mental health, problematic substance use and addiction treatment issues which affect individuals and families;
  2. person-centered care which promotes the use of recovery focused, harm reduction and inclusive approaches;
  3. family and caregiver issues and perspectives;
  4. peer support;
  5. eliminating stigma and discrimination; and
  6. progress reports received from the Executive Committee on the Towards Recovery Action Plan.

Membership for the Recovery Council will include individuals with:

  • Personal lived experience with mental illness, problematic substance use, and/or addictions;
  • Family experience with mental illness, problematic substance use, and/or addictions; and,
  • Personal experience with the mental health and addiction health care system.

Membership will also carefully consider the inclusion of individuals with diverse experiences including, but not limited to, regional representation, age, ethnicity, disability and gender balance.

Recovery Council members will meet over a five-year period to coincide with timelines of the mental health and addictions action plan. Council members will meet every two months or at the call of the chair. Meetings will be held in St. John's. Teleconference and/or videoconference services will be made available to members who live outside the St. John's region. Time of day for meetings will be determined by the Council chairperson in consultation with Council members.
